This blog, as you could probably tell, is not active any longer. I have moved on. 4e was a thing with me, and it still is a part of me, but I do not play as regularly and probably wont for a while. I am still very much into roleplaying and what it has to offer though.

I now run a blog called Get Geek . Check it out if you are interested. We do reviews on Comics, Movies, TV, Music. You name it. We also have a podcast where we look at tropes, and review products, talk about news important to Geeks.  So please if you enjoyed any of the Tuesday Terror’s or any other post here on The Home Den, then come check out the site. I plan to have RPG related content up at some point. I just haven’t figured that out yet.

2010: Top Ten Podcasts February 8, 2011

Whew. 2010 has been over for a while now but I feel I need to weigh my favorite podcasts of the year. I listen to a lot of podcasts during drives or washing dishes; these podcasts were the ones that made me laugh the hardest, and the ones were simply the funnest to listen to.

10.Fear the Boot: A great podcast about RPG design, theory and game mastering.

9.Post Cards From the Dungeon: A newcomer to me that has left a great impression. The show tackles ideas that help you as a game master get new ideas and thorough analysis of types of adventures, genre’s ect. If you are a gamemaster this is a must listen.

8. Spill Movie Reviews: Current  movie reviews done with multiple hosts and a comedic sensibility what else could I ask for?

7.Critical Hit a Major Spoilers Dungeons and Dragons podcast: The only actual play podcast I will listen to because it has good sound quality likable characters and a interesting if somewhat strange storyline.

6.Hypothetical Help: Real Advice with a little humor from the poddcaster to you. You can call in and have them help you out. Strong recommend. Very Funny.

5. Film Sack: Love bad 80’s movies? Thats great but you don’t have to, too enjoy this podcast about reviewing all the trash that can be found on netflix streaming. The hosts and their differences make the show what it is.

4. Nobody’s Listening: Even though the show ended in the summer it speaks to the strength of the podcast that it is this far up my list. This is a clean comedy podcast but don’t let that turn you off this is some of the best comedy 2010 had to offer. Also gets my nod for best intro/outro music!

3.Lets Do This! : GET TO DA CHAPA! Yes, this is just pure awesomeness. Be warned though can get very um inappropriate at times I would recommend earphones. Not really a topic that they stick to but its promised to be funny every time.

2. Major Spoilers podcast: Two shows a week. Now that is hard to pull off and still have great content each time. Whether the structured Tuesday show  or the free-form Saturday show they always deliver. Surprisingly I have found that I enjoy the Saturday show more and more.Check it out if you are into comics and pop-culture.

1. Giantbombcast : I wait with baited breath every week for this show and its done in one or two sittings. This is just a fun podcast to listen to even though I don’t play many video games.

Honorable Mention:  Extralife Radio- This would have made the list if it had lasted a little longer into 2010 but only 2 shows proper came out so I didn’t feel right putting it on the list. Great show though.

Tuesday Terror #36- Boss Monster II December 22, 2010

I’m back with some free time to make a new Boss Monster design courtesy of  Angry DM. If you have read previous tuesday terror’s then you probably figured  out that I like dragons. I like dragons a lot. My campaign has been building up to this moment and now I get to unveil Io to my players. Yes, Io the god of dragons which was split into bahamut and tiamat. Unfortunately he is being manipulated by the villain. Now they get to run into him and this is the fight. One thing I am assuming is that Io is huge. Not big like normal dragons but huge like city spanning wings.

If you don’t know the boss monster is a Solo split into 3 stages. Think video game boss. After you have done something the boss changes and has a new attack pattern but in 4e terms.

Setup: The PC’s are dropped off via airship and they confront the villain. Villain escapes and dragon comes out of ground to fight.

Stage 1: Io comes up from underground halfway leaving his bottom half under the ground. Io has weak spots on his feet

when they bleed small dragon’s spawn from his scales and attack. This is the most basic part of the fight. Io has a breath weapon that he can use.  The two feet should be too far away from each other for a player too move from one to the other in one turn. The idea is to split the party’s focus.

*Edit*: I forgot to add the minions :) I woke up today and thought there’s something…Oh crap. So here you are

.

Stage 2: When both claws have been hit point ridden Io’s feet shake and fall to the ground allowing the party to climb up them. Also just after this, distracting Io is the aforementioned airship. Instead of a monster stat block for this stage I went with a skill challenge. It is a level 29 skill challenge complexity 3 with 2 sections of 4 successes to succeed. The first section is scaling the arms and shoulders which are steaming hot and  sharp while Io is trying to shake them off(or at least shifting his weight whichever you prefer.Did I mention he was big). The second section is scaling the head.  Io spits out a full sized dragon crackling with heat, lightning and thunder energy. This section is about avoiding the dragons attack passes while climbing the neck Io. Use your own creativity and knowledge of your players to specifically make this more interesting to them. Each failure is 50 damage to the one who failed but is never fatal. If the whole challenge is failed then the spit dragon picks them up and throws them on Io’s back right where is wants them and gets a free round of actions before initiative is rolled with combat advantage against the party. Once on the head before they can do much damage the Spit dragon lands on the head to do battle with the PC’s lead to…

Stage 3: This guy has a fly by attack and I specifically let him be affected by movement because that keeps the focus on keeping the dragon from flying. Don’t forget about the aura or tail strike when using him! After he is defeated Io Roars and takes to flight ramming his head into the PC’s airship reuniting them with the ship just as it tumbles to earth. Of course you can end it anyway you want to. Again thanks to Angry for the template and inspiration.

I would normally put this in its own post(non tuesday terror) but I am having a killer head ache so this is what you get today.

A companion character explained in the DMG2 are characters to tag along with the party and help fill out empty roles ect. However they are not supposed to be too influential or steal the spotlight. With that out of the way here is Quinn. He is a half-elf cleric of Pelor.

In my game he happens to be a resurrected priest of Orcus. So you can play with that if you want but like everything on the blog feel free to do whatever with it.

Quinn

Oh and I will post a review of how my game with splug went. in short GREAT.

Today’s monster needs a bit of explaining.  Have you ever seen that episode of TV where the monster is basically unkillable except for that one really obscure weakness. This is kind of like that.

Steps to make your own.

  1. choose a monster or make your own
  2. come up with a way to kill the monster or a weakness
  3. watch your players squirm as they realize that they cant kill it like all the others!

To test this out I made a villain(in my campaign) that is very well known to a lot of 4th edition players.   I am of course talking about Splug. The one and only. So I basically had Splug outfitted with a magic belt that makes him invulnerable  and able to bash around epic level PC’s. Sounds fun right! Well its easy to make your campaigns wimpiest bady’s into guys your PC’s will be afraid of. Oh and I made his damage extra high because it won’t take long for them to take the belt off Splug.  Other than the gimmick he is a pretty standard monster. If I like how it plays out I might make another with more complicated mechanics.Anyway here he is.

” A golden beast descends and offers its back to you. It coos into the wind as you climb upon its back. Griping its etheral hide you launch into the air. The air whips past  and mountains seem small. You can tell your going to like this one.”

Religion DC 25: The Golden Wyverns of Pelor are Pelor’s personal guards and messengers through the astral sea. They are said to be given to Pelor’s servants who show the most obedience and power to do Pelor’s will.

I am sorry that this is going up late but I am pressed for time right now so I will keep this post to a minimal. I hop you can use this guy in your epic level game!

The Angel of doom is used to weaken their targets enough for the other angels to come in for the kill. They latch onto a target and don’t let go until they die.

So I am feeling a bit better and here with the next monster. So The MM2 already has a archangel but its a template and I don’t like it very much. So without any further adoo(I dont know how to spell that:).

”  On golden wings the angel fly’s with lightning speed and grace. His sword flies to deflect the blow aimed at your head.  With a spin of his blade the angel cuts the beast in half and points his finger at the beast charging at him making a glowing symbol appear on is chest…”

Religion check DC 19: Archangels are the commanders of the angel force. They inspire power in                                                                                           nearby angels and represent the intentions of their god. Archangels are                                                                                                 mostly promoted angels. From doing great deeds to simply being the oldest                                                                                          of them Archangles are very experienced.
